This 110,000 square foot, four story building on the Ocean Campus of the Community College of San Francisco includes classrooms, offices, and laboratories for instruction. The facility has a unique appearance and incorporates such novel building elements as a living green roof, four story atrium and generous student collaboration space. The building was designed to be ultra-efficient with cutting edge architectural and mechanical systems.


The building’s designers used natural convection and a series of exhaust fans above the atrium as the method to provide ventilation to the building, removing the need for Air Handlers and Ductwork.Heating and Cooling is provided by a radiant floor system and ventilation for the space is delivered by outside air louver sections. Each zone is controlled to achieve optimal student comfort via a complex algorithm that includes CO2 levels, space temperature, outdoor air temperature, dewpoint, wind direction and indoor humidity.


Since the Joint Use Facility is planned to be the first in a multi-building campus, in addition to the “public facing” student areas, a large, complex and efficient central plant was built that includes Chillers and Templifiers for cooling and heating and a series of 500+ Bore Wells for ground source heat rejection. This plant uses a primary, secondary, tertiary distribution system to distribute utilities around the campus.


To provide the control the complex mechanical systems, CCSF opted once again to partner with Syserco for an Alerton Energy Management & Control Solution.Syserco installed the Alerton EMCS to control the 265 Natural Ventilation Louvers, Radiant Heating/Cooling Floor System, atrium building ventilation system and complex campus central plant. Also worth noting is the advanced Weather Station utilized by Syserco for enhanced control of the natural ventilation systems.


The Joint Use Facility is a unique facility not just aesthetically or mechanically, but also because of its extensive Alerton EMCS system. The building achieved a LEED Platinum certification and Syserco’s involvement on the project played a key role in this accreditation.
